First of all, buy toys that are in the appropriate recommended age group for the child. Most toys will have a recommended age group written somewhere on the packaging (e.g 2-4 years, 8-10 years). It’s no good buying something outside the recommended age group because the child simply won’t enjoy it.

Secondly, do a little bit of research into what is popular among other children of the same age. Is there a particular television show for which matching figurines can be bought? Don’t think that you have to buy the same toys as everyone else, but sometimes this can be a good guide as to what toys are genuinely fun.
